"Embellishing Mix"
Celebrating the 400th Birthday of John Milton
August Highland
The "Embellishing Mix" is the first official mix in the "Paradise Effect" project. Influences from Highland's earlier work (decorative application, painterly style, et al) can be found in this mix. Successive mixes announce a marked departure from Highland's earlier bodies of work and are characterized by a deliberate emphasis on the text source and an insistence that the visual work be "read" as literary objects. The "Embellishing Mix" contains 100 works, each one a complete variation in compositional arrangement and each one containing a different compilation of text fragments from the poem, ranging in size between 1-character and 5-character textstrings. Individual words from a concordance of Paradise Lost are also included in this series. Over 20,000 text artifacts from Paradise Lost are contained in each work. The textual material is stacked multiple times, level upon level with underlying text partially or fully obscured by surface text.
