"Exhibition Literature" (also called "Alphanumeric Painting") represents a defining moment in the history of literature. August Highland developed his forward-thinking, visual/literary style in 2002. The first appearance of EL was featured in 2003 by "Turbulence" in New York and by "Random" in Italy. At this time, Highland's work was created for viewing on the screen. After these two online shows, August Highland began developing the proprietary techniques that today enable him to produce his work at a large scale on paper and canvas. Without the use of commercial graphic software, Highland "writes" his compositions by giving instructions for all elements, such as typefaces, font color and size, text sources, distribution of text, overall dimension of the work, and so on. These instructions are then converted into a visual piece and printed with archival pigmented ink on a wide-format printer. August Highland has appeared in numerous US gallery and museum exhibitions from Los Angeles to New York, has received invitations to exhibit around the world, and has been invited to speak about his literary and visual work by American Universities in California and at Harvard.
